Vulcano is the island of all of the Aeolian Islands where the attachment to nature represents an essential need for human well-being. For this reason, human action on the island has always been balanced, in order to emphasize its resources, but without undermining them.
For exemple, in the island you have the possibility of enjoying the benefits of thermal and sulphurous waters on the Sabbie Nere beach (in the natural harbour of Ponente).
The beauty of the island, which belongs to the municipality of Lipari, lies on the splendid sunsets that fall on the island of Filicudi and the mythological fascination conferred by the Greeks and Romans who called the island ‘terra calda’ (Terasia) because of the nature of its territory.
The most popular beaches are the Gelso beach and the Porto di Levante beach (near the mud baths mentioned above).
Vulcano is the perfect destination for those who love outdoor experiences, with its numerous and interesting excursions. For example, going north to the Fossa della Fucina, you will reach the top of the vulcano where soil is similar to the moonscape. Otherwise, if you hate trekking and love to relax, you can enjoy a wonderful boat trip to the Grotta del Cavallo, with its extraordinary colours and light effects.
For diving enthusiasts, you can head down to the Parete della Sirenetta, which runs along the slopes of an active volcanic cone, Capo Grosso, and finally see the Quaglietto rock. Reaching the island is easy: numerous ferries and hydrofoils routes operate all year round. The ports of Milazzo, Palermo, Naples, Messina and Reggio Calabria provide good connection to the island. The shipping companies are Siremar, Ustica Lines, Ngi and Snav.
