The Archaeological Monumental Area of Castello a Mare is located at the Port of Palermo.
It could be said that this fortress of the Castellammare encompasses two-thirds of the entire pier of the city’s harbour, where two areas can be visited: the Mastra Tower and an archaeological area.
The Castello a Mare is located right here, in the northern part of the city, within the Loggia district, where it was erected to defend the city’s port until the 20th century.
Today, only part of the Mastra Tower, the entrance body and the cylindrical tower remain visible.
The imposing complex, however, originally included a square-shaped wall, an Arab-era keep, the Bagnara Chapel from the Norman era, the Church of Our Lady of Piedigrotta, ramparts and an entrance area both from the 15th century, two low hexagonal towers, a Renaissance-era palace, and various other structures.
