The Sanctuary of Tindari is an important Catholic holy place located in the hilltop of Tindari, in the province of Messina. This sanctuary is dedicated to the Black Madonna of Tindari, a miraculous statue representing the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus.
Even if the construction of the sanctuary dates back to the 14th century, it was enlarged during the following centuries, becoming a popular place of pilgrimage.
In addition to the Black Madonna, the sanctuary holds many other valuable works of art, such as the statue of the Black Christ, some paintings by Olivio Sozzi and the carved wooden choir.
The Tindari Sanctuary is also famous for its breathtaking panoramic view of the bay of Patti and the Aeolian Islands. Visitors can enjoy a walk in the surrounding hills, visit the sanctuary’s gardens and avenues, and participate in religious celebrations held throughout the year.
