The ‘Civica and A. Ursino Recupero’ Reunited Libraries (The Biblioteche Riunite) originate from the Libraries of the Benedictine Fathers, the suppressed Catanese religious congregations, the Mario Rapisardi Museum Library and the Baron Antonio Ursino Recupero Library.
The Library’s holdings include illuminated manuscripts, manuscripts, parchments, choir books, dried herbals, incunabula, sixteenth-century books, rare and valuable ancient and modern books, flyers, newspapers and periodicals, drawings and material of local and Sicilian interest. The library currently has a book heritage of over 290,000 volumes.
The Biblioteche Riunite “Civica e A. Ursino Recupero” have given the utmost attention and priority to the restoration of the building, the upgrading and functional reorganisation of the facilities with the installation of IT and technological equipment to ensure an increasingly efficient service for scholars and numerous visitors;
they have signed collaboration agreements with various prestigious institutions and Memoranda of Understanding for internships and training and orientation stages with major Italian universities; they have produced several documentaries and television reports with local, national and international broadcasters; they are locations for films and television dramas; they host and promote exhibitions, theatre shows and cultural events of various kinds.
