The Pescheria, in Sicilian Piscaria, is the historical fish market in Catania, renowned for its colours and picturesque atmosphere that brings this place back to the level of the Arab souks and that in Sicily has only one direct ‘competitor’: the ‘Vucciria’ market in Palermo.
The fish stalls are located in front of the historical ‘Archi della Marina’ in a tunnel dug in the 16th century under the Palace of the Seminario dei Chierici.
The market is renowned for its ‘vuciata’, or the shouting of the vendors who grab the attention of customers and the always fresh fish of many varieties on the stalls.
The fish stalls have been located since the beginning of the 19th century in the tunnel dug under the Palace of the Seminario dei Chierici and the walls of Charles V, in front of the Archi della Marina, once submerged in the waters of the fishermen’s harbour below, which has now become a public green area.
