The main square in Catania, called Piazza Duomo, is the heart of the Etna historic center. Rebuilt in 1700 after the tragic earthquake that occurred in 1693, this square was designed by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, one of the most important architects in Sicilian history.
Here you can admire some of the most significant examples of Sicilian Baroque masterpieces such as the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, the Amenano Fountain, the town hall and the Elephant Fountain with its iconic obelisk: the symbol of the city.
Today Piazza Duomo is considered the main meeting point of the city and the energetic heart of its nightlife, thanks to the presence of many pubs, restaurants and pizzerias that animate the historic city center.
